Speleothem calcium carbonate oxygen isotope records (d18OCc) indicate that the collapse of the AMOC caused dramatic changes in the distribution and variability of the East Asian and Indian monsoon rainfall. However, the mechanisms linking changes in the intensity of the AMOC and Asian monsoon d18OCc are not fully understood. Part of the challenge arises from the fact that speleothem d18OCc depends on not only the d18O of precipitation but also temperature and kinetic isotope effects. Here we quantitatively deconvolve these parameters affecting d18OCc by applying three geochemical techniques in speleothems covering the penultimate glacial termination. Our data suggest that the weakening of the AMOC during meltwater pulse 2A caused substantial cooling in East Asia and a shortening of the summer monsoon season, whereas the collapse of the AMOC during meltwater pulse 2B (133,000 years ago) also caused a dramatic decrease in the intensity of the Indian summer monsoon. These results reveal that the different modes of the AMOC produced distinct impacts on the monsoon system. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Max Planck Society # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation of China # Grant: 41888101 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: 1702816 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Institute for Basic Science # Grant: IBS-R028-Y2 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Jiangjun Cave # Location: Asia>Eastern Asia>China # Northernmost_Latitude: 22.95 # Southernmost_Latitude: 22.95 # Easternmost_Longitude: 104.82 # Westernmost_Longitude: 104.82 # Elevation_m: 200 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Jiangjun2021JJ0406iso # First_Year: 137277 # Last_Year: 124339 # Time_Unit: cal. year BP # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: oxygen isotopes, geochemistry, other # Notes: Fluid inclusion isotopes, TEX86, D47, D48 #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## dft_Cc depth,,,millimeter,,speleothems,,,N,depth from top Speleothem JJ0406 ## Age age,,,calendar kiloyear before present,,speleothems,,,N, age Speleothem JJ0406 ## d13CCc delta 13C,calcium carbonate,,per mil VPDB,,speleothems,,,N, ## d18OCc delta 18O,calcium carbonate,,per mil VPDB,,speleothems,,,N, #------------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
