During CIS 13, depleted δ18O and elevated element values imply a concurrence of strong ASM and high precipitation at southern China. In mid-HS 5, the ASM intensity significantly declined, with a slight decrease in monsoonal rainfall. This suggests that ASM circulation and monsoonal precipitation were differently expressed under contrasting climate regimes. Sensitivity tests reveal that the ASM intensity was dictated by temperature/pressure gradients, while regional rainfall chiefly responded to the degree of regional or hemispheric warming. In HS 5, high sea surface temperature likely favored to maintain a strong deep convection over tropical oceans, thus resulting in a weak rainfall reduction.
