The water table was more than 5 m above present level between about 116,000 and 53,000 yr ago, fluctuated between about +5 and +9 m during the period between about 44,000 and 20,000 yr ago, and declined rapidly from +9 to its present level during the past 20,000 yr. Because the Ash Meadows groundwater basin is greater than 12,000 km2 in extent, these documented water-table fluctuations are likely to be of regional significance. Although different in detail, water-level fluctuation recorded by Browns Room calcites generally correlate with other Great Basin proxy palcoclimatic data. #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US Geological Survey # Grant: Global Change and Climate History Program #-------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Devils Hole # Location: Nevada # Northernmost_Latitude: 36.4256 # Southernmost_Latitude: 36.4256 # Easternmost_Longitude: -116.2908 # Westernmost_Longitude: -116.2908 # Elevation_m: 719 #-------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: devilsHole_szabo1994 # Earliest_Year: 116000 # Most_Recent_Year: 1100 # Time_Unit: calendar year BP # Core_Length_m: # Parameter_Keywords: age control # Notes: Occurrence of mammillary calcite indicates paleowater table was above collection point; folia and flowstone indicate, respectively, that the paleowater table was at or below sample elevation. Dates marked as not used were either inconsistent with specimen stratigraphy or else were a composite age of mammillary calcite and folia from subunits 1 and 2 (DH-BR2-1+2). Sample DH-BR6 at 74-76.5 mm was corrected for detrital 230Th contamination using initial 232Th/238U = 3.8 +/- 2.0 (atomic ratio) and initial 230Th, 234U, and 238U = 1 (activity ratio). # 238U_Decay_Constant: #
