Thorne Moors, Yorkshire, Eastern England - brit036 Additional Site information Gretel Boswijk Dendrochronological analysis of 40 oak and 264 Scots pine samples from Thorne Moors, Humberhead Levels, Yorkshire, Eastern England, was undertaken in order to develop and date robust oak and pine chronologies and reconstruct the past woodland landscape. Thorne Moors is a raised mire located in the Humberhead Levels, near the head of the Humber estuary. The site has been subject to extensive peat extraction which uncovered the remains of a buried forest in thebasal peats. Analysis of the tree-ring data and other palaeo-environmental evidence was used to study the lateral development of the raised mire at Thorne Moors. Four robust chronologies were established, representing distinct phases of woodland between 3777 and 1489 BC. The chronologies are: 1) TM01: 24 timber oak chronology (3777-3017 BC) 2) PISY: 70 timber Scots pine chronology (2921-2445 BC) 3) GM01: 34 timber Scots pine chronology (2229-1890 BC) 4) GM02: 51 timber Scots pine chronology (1690-1489 BC) PISY, GM01 and GM02 were the first Scots pine chronologies to be established and dendrochronologically dated from Eastern England.
