Big White, British Columbia, Canada, Engelmann Spruce - CANA150 Additional Site Information Roberta Parish and Brandy Small Radii are from discs collected at the base of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, harvested in November 1998. 2-year cycle spruce budworm (Choristoneura biennis) was active in the area from c. 1940-1956. We suspect that spruce and fir were defoliated during that period. Comparison of spruce and fir chronologies with that of non host lodgepole pine suggest that periodic infestations have occurred in the past. Engelmann spruce discs had scars and reduced growth from tomentosus infections, which on occasion advanced into the root collar, affected growth independent of climate on certain discs. We avoided area with scars but the impact on radial growth was variable and on occasion sample radii passed through affected zones. These account for some poor correlations c. 1875-1925. Forest had a fair open canopy, <500 stems per hectare, but with a dense subcanopy.
