ITRDB Data file correction December 1996 The file GERM019.CRN, site Name BERCHTESGADEN, has been changed to include a missing ring in the year 1771. This corrects an apparent dating problem found by Rob Wilson, rob.wilson@rphc1.physik.uni-regensburg.de. The analysis leading to this action is as follows: Both Spruce and Larch crossdate very well, so I introduced a couple of Spruce chronologies to strengthen the whole process. I built a master with the chronologies: Ital007 Spruce Ital025 Spruce Ital024 Larch Aust004 Larch Germ019 Larch Using ITRVIEW, I matched the chronology with other Larch Chronolgies from the Alps. The missing year appears to be 1771. The resulting corrected chronology crossdates much better. NOTE: All statistics reported below describe the raw measurement file, not the chronology itself. Analysis of the chronology file and changes made are described at the end of this file. This file should be viewed with a non-proportional font. I built a master with the chronologies: Ital007 Spruce Ital025 Spruce Ital024 Larch Aust004 Larch Germ019 Larch running them through COFECHA gave the results 0.49 0.47 0.52 0.60 0.22** The COFECHA printout showed B-flagging for GERM019 going back from around the 1700-50 period. I then just as an experiment inserted a value for 1723 and then tested the new file against the other chronologies. Crossdating was perfect. I am inclined to believe that 1723 is the year that is missing. As a final check, I used ITRVIEW and checked the period for all chronologies from 1715-1730. The GERM019 file did not show the 1723 narrow ring where the other chronologies did. This whole period was generally quite suppressed for the German chronology.
