CAMOSCIARA E M.TE AMARO, Italy - ITAL001 Additional Site Information Franco Biondi Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 (USA) Chronologies were developed using the computer program ARSTAN (Cook 1985), as follows: 1) logarithmic transformation of the original ring-width measure- ments, to obtain homoscedastic time series (Davis 1986); 2) curve fitting of the logarithmic values using a cubic spline with 50% variance reduction at a frequency of one cycle per 50 years (Blasing et al. 1983); 3) removal of the growth trend by subtracting the curve value from the logarithmic value for that year: the resulting difference is the standardized ring-index (Fritts 1976); 4) average of all ring-indices for a given year, to obtain the reference tree-ring chronology as a series of annual mean ring-indices. In mathematical form, N ä (ln wt - yt)i _ i=1 It = ----------------- N where _ I = mean ring-index = value of the master chronology; t = calendar year; ln = logarithmic transformation; w = ring-width measurement, in 1/100 mm; y = fitted value, using a cubic spline with 50% variance re- duction at a frequency of one cycle per 50 years; i = specimen; N = number of specimens available for year t. Four reference tree-ring chronologies have been developed so far, one for Norway spruce (Picea abies or Picea excelsa) at Campolino, one for black pine (Pinus nigra) at Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, and the other two for umbrella pine (Pinus pinea), at Parco Nazionale del Circeo and at Tenuta di San Rossore.
