Dysart Woods, Ohio - OH006 Additional Site Information Darrin L. Rubino and Brian C. McCarthy Dysart Woods is located in Belmont County, Ohio, USA. The site was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1968. The woods is a land laboratory owned and operated by Ohio University for teaching and research. The trail system throughout the old-growth is open to the public. However, to use the site, researchers require written permission from the Director of Dysart Woods, Department of Environmental and Plant Biology, Ohio University, Athens, OH, 45701. Dysart Woods is a 185 ha land laboratory owned by Ohio University (Athens, OH, USA). Contained within the laboratory are 22 ha of old-growth forest. The old-growth stands are unique in that they represent the only remnants of original vegetation remaining in unglaciated southeastern Ohio. Dysart Woods is classified as mixed mesophytic forest with 10-12 tree species sharing dominance in the canopy. The overstory is dominated primarily by of white oak (Quercus alba), red oak (Q. rubra), tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), black-gum (Nyssa sylvatica) red maple (Acer rubrum), and sugar maple (A. saccharum). The Quercus alba trees represent the largest trees in the woods with many attaining a diameter at breast height greater than 100 cm and age greater than 300 years. All sampling was performed on a south- to southwest-facing slope (slope range 3 - 32 A total of 10 samples were obtained for dendrochronological analysis. Samples include seven increment cores (dbh), two plunge slabs (1 m from ground), and one slab (basal). Due to sampling restrictions set forth by site management policy, only ten samples could be obtained. The slabs were obtained from trees which had recently died. Sampling was performed in the winter of 1998 (samples DYS08, DYS01, DYS02, DYS03) and late summer 1998 (DYS04, DYS05, DYS06, DYS07, DYS09, DYS10). All samples were obtained from white oak (Quercus alba). Note: The sample ID for the basal area increment measurements correspond to the sample ID provided above (e.g., BAI01 represents the basal area increment measurements of DYS01). Note: This project was performed in order to determine the age of the oldest, largest trees and to study the stand disturbance history (e.g., suppressions, releases, fire). Measurements were made using a VELMEX movable stage (0.01 mm precision). COFECHA output: Chronology file name : OH006.CRN Measurement file name : OH006.RWL Date checked : 28MAR05 Checked by : H.
