Bokhoma Log Pond, Oklahoma - OK043 Additional Site Information Doug Stevenson Tom Lynch Dennis Wilson Cody Anderson Notes: Bokhoma Log Pond is an old sawmill pond located about 15 miles east of Idabel, Oklahoma in the southeast corner of the state. We recovered 24 sawlogs from the bottom of it in September 2014. These logs became waterlogged and sank to the bottom of the pond where they were preserved from decay. We cut disks (cookies) from the butt end of each log, polished it and made a series from it. The grand-daughter of the original owner told us the mill had closed "about 1910." Using this as a starting point, we cross-dated our chronology against the McCurtain County Chronology, obtaining 1772-1912 as the dates. Bokhoma was serviced by a railroad. The old mill siding still exists. Logs were brought in by rail and off-loaded into the pond. Many still bare the teeth marks of the loader. They were sorted in the pond and floated to the bull chain to be carried into the mill. The oldest two trees (BLP27 and BLP29) were not sawlogs. They were far too small and hollow. We believe they were standing on the bank of the pond and were cut to make room for the bull chain. Many logs showed evidence of a possible fire in 1862. By 1900 any trees damaged 38+ years earlier would have rotted out and been worthless as sawlogs; thus, no fire-scarred logs made it into the sample. There was no charring or scarring, but the 1862-1867 rings were irregular in shape and wider than preceding rings; although, the extra width might be explained by release following a logging about 1862. We believe that most logs came from the quarter-section where the mill stood, as that was owned by the same family. Comparing Bokhoma Log Pond with McCurtain County Chronology, one notices a distinct difference in the 1836 ring. There was a severe ice storm on November 23-25, 1835* that affected trees in the McCurtain County Chronology and areas farther north and east, but skipped Bokhoma and vicinity. BLP04 has a better correlation one year earlier, but when this is done, the correlation is better one year later. BLP10 does the same thing if placed two years later. In both cases, we settled the matter by reference to cross-dating. BLP31 consists of two segments that correlate well by themselves, but poorly when joined by a missing-data symbol. BLP27 has the same problem. *Forts Dataset (Fort Gibson, Oklahoma), University of Illinois. References: Stahle, D., G. Jacoby, E. Cook and S. Schoenholz. 1982. McCurtain County – PIEC – ITRDB OK019. The Bokhoma Log Pond TOTAL RING WIDTH dataset (OK043.rwl) has been detrended. Ring widths were detrended using a natural logarithm, then fit to a logarithmic growth curve and detransformed the residuals. Missing value flag -9 has been used in this file.
