Wal Trzebnicki, Poland - POLA021 Additional Site Information Tomasz H. Szymura Purpose of Collection: Ecology Detrend method: Negative exponontial or linear regression with negative or 0 slope. Cores are available at : Department of Ecology and Nature Protection Institute of Plant Biology Wroclaw University Kanonia 6/8, PL-50-328 Wroclaw POLAND Study site The study site is situated in eastern part of Trzebnica foothills in western part of Poland with a mean elevation of 100-150 m. a.s.l., occasionally upper than 250 m. a.s.l. It is mainly rural and forested area. The average annual temperature is 7.7 C (January 1.7 C, July 17.4 C), the annual average precipitation is 550-560 mm, and 60 f precipitation takes place during the growth season. The core were taken form firs growing in mixed conifer-broad leaves, old- growth stands protected since 1950-s. in three nature reserves: „Gola”, „Jodłowice” and „Jodły Ostrzeszowskie”. Briefly characteristics of these stands and sites are present below. Population: ‘Gola’, elevation 235 m a.s.l., location 51°21´29´´N 17° 33´20´´E, soil: acid brown, phytocenosis: Abieteti – polonicum, share of fir: 14 stand DBHS 27,8 m2/ha, stand density 480 N/ha Population: ‘Jodłowice’, elevation 137 m a.s.l., location 51°17´25´´N 16° 48´03´´E, soil: acid brown, phytocenosis: Abieteti – polonicum, share of fir: 14 stand DBHS 29,7 m2/ha, stand density 426 N/ha Population: ‘Jodły Ostrzeszowskie’, elevation 188 m a.s.l., location 51° 25´47´´N 17°59´35´´E, soil: haplic luvisole, phytocenosis: Abieteti – polonicum, share of fir: 37 stand DBHS 14,4 m2/ha, stand density 620 N/ha The crown condition shown that firs in investigated populations doesn’t differ in vitality from firs in centre of its distribution in Poland, or average in Europe (results not published yet). Analysis of available documentation, my own observations as well oral information of foresters don’t show that insects or fungal attack affected trees. Field sampling and dendrochronological methods The cores were taken at a breast height, from trees inside circular sample plots established in network of 100x100m in each reserve, area of individual sample plot was 250 m2. The investigations were done in protected areas, thus, due decision of local Environment Protection Authorities only one core per tree was taken, and the number of sampled tree was limited. These data were cross-dated by visual comparison of ring-width curves for identification of missing rings, with additionally support of COFECHA software The series was detrended by a two-step process. Firstly, a negative linear or exponential function was fitted. Secondly, a cubic smoothing spline with a 50 requency response cut-off of 32 years was used.
