This data set contains 25 northern Great Plains chronologies. Species represented are bur oak, ponderosa pine, and Rocky Mountain juniper. Included are the .rwl files and the standard (.std) and residual (.res) chronologies. Anyone interested in using the chronologies should refer to this report: "Tree-Ring Collections in the Northern Great Plains in 1991 and 1992" by David Meko, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ and Carolyn Hull Sieg Rocky Mountain Forest and Research Experiment Station South Dakota School of Mines Campus Rapid City, SD The report is an appendix to a final project report to the Climate Dynamics Division of NSF (Grant No. ATM-9017155). Copies can be obtained from me at cost of photocopying. The report has information on the site collections, method of chronology development, and strength of precipitation signal in the chronologies. As described in the report, not all ringwidth series from the .rwl files were used in the final chronologies. Also, beginning and ending parts of some ringwidth series were truncated for various reasons (questionable dating, juvenile growth, etc.) before building the chronologies. I also made use of special ARSTAN curve fits (described in the report) for many of the chronologies. All these things are controlled by the masks and special curve fit settings in ARSTAN. If anyone wants to duplicate computation of a chronology from the .rwl data, they will need the same ARSTAN settings I used. Anyone sick enough to really want to do this can contact me for the necessary "batch" file of ARSTAN input sequence. The chronolgies in the files are the same as those listed, plotted , and analyzed in the report, except for MAIBRI and ICEPEM. Those two were computed from merged .rwl files. MAIBRI comes from merging report chronolgoies MAI and BRI. ICEPEM comes from merging ICE and PEM. I kept the same curve fits as described in the report for MAI and BRI in making MAIBRI, but changed to a 110-year spline for all ringwidth series in making ICEPEM. Of the 25 chronologies, four might be considered "updates" of previously existing chronolgies. The trees sampled are not necessarily the same as in the earlier collections. The four update sites are: Burning Coal Vein (1980's collection by same name by Meko and Harlan) Buckhorn Mountain (1980's collection "Custer" from nearly the same location) Eagle Nest Canyon (1980's collection "Slim Butte" might overlap some trees) Pilger Mountain (1960's collection "Pilger Mountain Lookout" by Hal Fritts from same mountain; tornado in intervening years devastated the old collection site; probably no common trees sampled) CEJSTD CEDAR BUTTE JUNIPER JUSC SOUTH DAKOTA ROCKY MTN JUNIPER 0785M +4336-10107 1691 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD005.CRN KDDSTD KILLDEER-DVIRNAK QUMA NORTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 0823M +4725-10255 1777 1990 MEKO, SIEG ND004.CRN BCVSTD BURNING COAL VEIN PIPO NORTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 0792M +4436-10328 1592 1990 MEKO, SIEG ND001.CRN BHMSTD BUCKHORN MOUNTAIN PIPO SOUTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 1768M +4347-10336 1600 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD002.CRN BLRSTD BLAIR QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1097M +4420-10326 1753 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD003.CRN CEDSTD CEDAR BUTTE PINE PIPO SOUTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 0785M +4336-10107 1646 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD004.CRN CRSSTD CROSS RANCH -- SANGER UNIT QUMA NORTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 0442M +4709-10101 1788 1990 MEKO, SIEG ND002.CRN CRYSTD CRYSTAL CAVE QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1230M +4357-10318 1833 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD006.CRN CSPSTD CUSTER STATE PARK QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1340M +4345-10323 1775 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD007.CRN ENCSTD EAGLE NEST CANYON PIPO SOUTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 1090M +4521-10308 1651 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD008.CRN FDFSTD FRAWLEY DAIRY FARM QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1130M +4428-10340 1807 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD009.CRN FRWSTD FRAWLEY OAK QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1230M +4429-10341 1892 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD010.CRN GCESTD GRACE COOLIDGE OAK UMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1234M +4345-10321 1767 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD011.CRN GCPSTD GRACE COOLIDGE PINE PIPO SOUTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 1234M +4345-10321 1703 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD012.CRN HNKSTD HANKINS GROUP QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1520M +4420-10341 1875 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD013.CRN HRMSTD LAKE HERMAN STATE PARK QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 0512M +4359-09710 1740 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD014.CRN ICESTD ICELANDIC STATE PARK/PEMBINA HILLS QUMA NORTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 0297M +4850-09740 1830 1992 MEKO, SIEG ND003.CRN MAISTD MASONIC ISLAND/BEAR ISLAND QUMA NORTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 0658M +4859-10021 1676 1990 MEKO, SIEG ND005.CRN TRSSTD THEODORE ROOSEVELT NATIONAL PARK JUSC NORTH DAKOTA ROCKY MTN JUNIPER 1630M +4655-10329 1630 1991 MEKO, SIEG ND006.CRN SSPSTD STONE STATE PARK QUMA IOWA BUR OAK 0396M +4233- 9628 1796 1991 MEKO, SIEG IA033.CRN ORLSTD ORLAND HUTTERITE COLONY QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 0523M +4351-09703 1859 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD015.CRN PLGSTD PILGER MOUNTAIN PIPO SOUTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 1392M +4330-10353 1646 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD016.CRN RENSTD RENO GULCH PIPO SOUTH DAKOTA PONDEROSA PINE 1658M +4354-10336 1281 1991 MEKO, SIEG SD017.CRN ROCSTD ROCKERVILLE QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1370M +4356-10322 1717 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD018.CRN THOSTD THOMPSON QUMA SOUTH DAKOTA BUR OAK 1036M +4435-10400 1747 1990 MEKO, SIEG SD019.CRN COFECHA output: Chronology file name : SD002.CRN Measurement file name : SD002.RWL Date checked : 02SEP96 Technician's name : MARIETTE SEKLECKI Supervisor's name : HENRI D.
