Central Oland, Sweden - SWED339 Additional Site Information Torbjorn Axelson Measurement type: Total ring width Notes: This is an oak collection for the central part of Öland, a major island in the Baltic sea. A closer look at this collection reveals that it actually is in two parts. The younger consists mainly of samples collected from living trees in 2003-2005. Most of them only cover the 20th century, but a few goes back to mid 19th century. The other part is a selection among historical samples, almost all samples from postmills (small windmills), very typical for this island. Many hundreds of them are preserved and I cored and dated a number of them during 2003-2014. The post is usually made of an oak beam at least 80 cm in diameter, and a number of other parts are often possible to sample. The mills were in use until late 19th century and from 1920 they became a symbol of the island and therefore preserved. It turned out that almost all the oakwood in them are felled between 1680 and 1800, and after that almost only some pieces from smaller trees (branches even?) are found in repair works from 19th century. (Usually of poor dendro-quality). In 1677 most of the farmsteads on the island were burnt down by foreign troops and no mills from before that event are known. Until about 1800 the logging of oak trees were strictly regulated by the Crown, but the farmers could get permission for some trees for important needs. When the regulations ended it seems that the oaks rapidly disappeared from the landscape, and today only few oaks older than 200 years remain, and they are usually protected (and too wide for sampling). So, as the internal bridging is far too weak to certify the dating, the older part has been dated towards other references, e.g ITRDB:POLA007 by T. Wasny. Most of the trees are likely Quercus robur (QURO), but there may also be some Quercus petraea (QUPE), as it is found on the island although less frequent. The altitude distribution is between 0-50 m.a.s.l. The living trees grow in different location less than 10 km from the given coordinates. The historical samples are from a wider area up to about 30 km from that point (between Mörbylånga and Föra). Almost all sampling is done with Haglöfs increment borers 5.15 mm.
