A Retrospective Dendroecology of American Chestnut. Ecological Monographs, 1999. Detrending is double, with the first option being an exponential. If the exponential is fit, a spline with half power cutoff equal to the length of the series is then used detrend the 1st set of indices. If the exponential cannot be fit, then a regression line is fit, and a spline with stiffness equal to 67% of the series length is fit. In no case is a spline with stiffness specification less than 100 yrs fit. Indices are computed as the ratio of measurement to fitted curve. Multivariate autoregressive modeling, with model order initially chosen by Akaike Info Criterion(AIC) minimum, gives the pooled model. If the AIC first minimum is inadequate, the model order can be specified. The individual series are each modeled with the pooled model and the individual residual series are averaged to derive the residual chronology. If the residual chronology still contains an unacceptable amount of persistence, it is rewhitened. The variance of each chronology is detrended with a cubic spline of stiffness equal to the chronology length.
