Annette Lake Trail, ALT - WA085 Additional Site Information Note: Materials referred to below (cores, photographs, notes, etc.) are archived at the Tree-Ring Laboratory, University of Washington, Seattle WA 98195. SITE NAME: Annette Lake Trail, ALT COLLECTION DATE: 16 July 1987 LATITUDE: 47O 22' LONGITUDE: 121O 20' LEGAL LOCATION: WA, T22N, R10E, NE 1/4 of S24; Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, North Bend Ranger District. APPROACH: Take I-90 E to Denny Creek/Asahel Curtis exit. Turn right (S) and then left (E) and follow signs to the parking area for the Annette Lake and Asahel Curtis trails. Ascend the Annette Lake Trail, crossing a powerline and a railroad. The stand begins about 100m past the railroad, where the trail passes from an old clearcut into old-growth. The stand continues to a stream crossing a few hundred meters further. All sampled trees are at least 15m uphill from the trail. ASPECT: 285 degrees SLOPE: 46 percent ELEVATION: 2450-2785 FEET 747-849 METERS QUADRANGLE: Snoqualmie Pass, WA 7.5' PHOTOS: For each sampled tree #53-#78, archived at University of Washington. STAND NOTES: Releve: 15% ACCI, 10% BENE, 5% BLSP, 2% TIUN, 2% OPHO, 2% SMST, 1% GYDR, 1% PYAS. Also ATFE, ACTR, CHME, CHUM, CLUN, COCA, COME, GAOV, GASH, GOOB, LIBO, LICA, MEFE, POMU, TABR, TROV, VAAL, VAME, VAPA and VISE. Sampled microsites vary from OPHO to GASH in wetness; site quite heterogeneous. Association is ABAM/BENE by this releve, but portions are VAAL, TIUN or even OPHO. Regeneration ABAM, TSHE. Overstory 100-140cm PSME, 50-90cm TSHE, 30-60cm ABAM, minor THPL. Moderate CWD, mostly DC 4. Snags about 10% of dominant stems. Substrate seldom visible except in large windthrows; Snoqualmie batholith-derived granite colluvium. Stand may have experienced a windthrow in the past - 50 years? - that cleared about 40% of dominant stems. Core of one recon tree suggests stand age around 500 years. MAP OF SITE: See field form and enlarged topo map (University of Washington). TREE DATA For tree form (all are erect old growth), slope position (all are midslope), remarks on the trees and microsite vegetation, see the field forms (University of Washington). Nearest neighbor: Distance in meters, species, DBH in cm Core azimuth: Measured as clock time to the nearest hour, with upslope taken as 12:00. They were standardized using program defaults, which involve use of a cubic spline that removes 50% of variance at 128 years. Persons desiring to use this data for purposes other than screening are advised to use the crossdated ring width measurements, also available from the ITRDB, and to develop chronologies suited to their particular needs. These data were originally collected for a study of air pollution impacts on tree growth in the Puget Sound region and were analysed on a core-by-core basis using a process that did not entail chronology development. Details are available in the following source: Brubaker, L.B.; Vega-Gonzalez, S.; Ford, E.D.; Ribic, C.A.; Earle, C.J.; and Segura, S. 1992. Old-growth Douglas-fir in western Washington. P. 333-364 in Olson, R.K.; Binkley, D.; and Bohm, M., eds., "The response of western forests to airpollution." Springer-Verlag, New York.
