San Juan Hill - WA090 Additional Site Inofrmation Note: Materials referred to below (cores, photographs, notes, etc.) are archived at the Tree-Ring Laboratory, University of Washington, Seattle WA 98195. SITE NAME: San Juan Hill, SJH (Called Bear Mountain Two, BMP, on reconnaissance). COLLECTION DATE: 15 July 1987 LATITUDE: 47 deg 52.5 min LONGITUDE: 121 deg 20.0 min LEGAL LOCATION: WA, T28N, R11E, NW 1/4 of S36; Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Skykomish Ranger District. APPROACH: From I-5, take U.S. 2 E to Index. Turn left (N) and follow the paved road up the N. Fork of the Skykomish. This road turns to gravel and, as F.S. Road 65, climbs S to Jack Pass. At the pass, several roads come together. Take the rightmost fork, which heads NNW through a clearcut dense with young alder. Park shortly after turning the N ridge of San Juan Hill; the stand is visible above about 100m of clearcut on the left (SE) side of the road. The stand is generally on the broad N ridge of San Juan Hill, spanning about 80m of elevation. The sampled trees are generally on or slightly W of this ridge. ASPECT: 327 degrees SLOPE: 29 percent ELEVATION: 3040-3310 FEET 925-1010 METERS QUADRANGLE: Blanca Lake, WA 7.5' and Evergreen Peak, WA 7.5' PHOTOS: For recon tree, for sampled trees #26-#48, and for a cored understory ABAM, archived at University of Washington. STAND NOTES: Releve: 70% VAME, 30% VAAL, 5% MOSS, 1-3% OF CHUM, COCA and MEFE. Also BLSP, CHME, CLUN, COME, GAOV, GASH, LIBO, LICO, OPHO, PYSE, RULA, VAPA. Association is ABAM/VAME. Regeneration is ABAM, TSHE. Overstory 100-190cm PSME and 70-120cm THPL, 40-110cm TSHE, 0-70cm ABAM and rare TSME and CHNO. Large woody debris minor, mostly 60-100cm PSME and THPL, decay classes 3 to 5. About 5% standing dead dominants. Disturbance not apparent since stand initiation, except for edge effects from surrounding clearcuts; sampling avoided these. Substrate of granite-derived colluvium with some pyroclastics. Site age, based on one tree recon, 650-700 years. MAP OF SITE: See field form and enlarged topo map, archived at University of Washington. CHRONOLOGY DEVELOPMENT The chronologies were developed using Program CRONOL as distributed by the ITRDB ca. 1994. They were standardized using program defaults, which involve use of a cubic spline that removes 50% of variance at 128 years. Persons desiring to use this data for purposes other than screening are advised to use the crossdated ring width measurements, also available from the ITRDB, and to develop chronologies suited to their particular needs. These data were originally collected for a study of air pollution impacts on tree growth in the Puget Sound region and were analysed on a core-by-core basis using a process that did not entail chronology development. Details are available in the following source: Brubaker, L.B.; Vega-Gonzalez, S.; Ford, E.D.; Ribic, C.A.; Earle, C.J.; and Segura, S. 1992. Old-growth Douglas-fir in western Washington. P. 333-364 in Olson, R.K.; Binkley, D.; and Bohm, M., eds., "The response of western forests to air pollution." Springer-Verlag, New York.
