Tahoma Creek Trailhead - WA091 Additional Site Information Note: Site longitude corrected from 122 degrees 53 minutes W to 121 degrees 53 minutes W on 2/26/2015) Note: Materials referred to below (cores, photographs, notes, etc.) are archived at the Tree-Ring Laboratory, University of Washington, Seattle WA 98195. SITE NAME: Tahoma Creek Trailhead, TCT COLLECTION DATE: 26 July 1987 LATITUDE: 46 degrees 47.5 minutes LONGITUDE: 122 degrees 53 minutes (Note: Longitude corrected to 121 degrees 53 minutes, 2/26/2015) LEGAL LOCATION: WA, T15N, R7E, N 1/2 of S14; Mount Rainier National Park. APPROACH: From Pack Forest (UW), take State 7 E about 8mi to Elbe. Turn left (E) and take State 706 E to Mount Rainier National Park; drive into the park about 1mi and turn left (N) onto the Westside Road. Proceed up this road 4.3mi to the trailhead. Trailhead is on the right (E) side of the road; site is on the left (W) side. See sketch map for tree locations. Note: Much (or all) of the site may have disappeared due to a series of jokulhlaups on Tahoma Creek in the early 1990's. ASPECT: 278 degrees SLOPE: 22 percent ELEVATION: 3150-3210 feet 960-980 meters QUADRANGLE: Mt. Wow, WA 7.5 minute PHOTOS: Recon in site and of tree, and for each sampled tree #190-#213, archived at University of Washington. STAND NOTES: Releve: 50% VAAL, 20% MOSS, 10% VAME, 10% VAPA, 10% LIBO, 10% CHUM, quite heterogeneous apart from the VAAL component. Also ACCI, ACTR, ADBI, ATFE, BLSP, CLUN, COCA, Corallorhiza sp., GATR, GOOB, GYDR, HYMO, LICA, LYCL, OPHO, POMU, PYSE, RUPE, SMST, TIUN, VAHE. Association is clearly ABAM/VAAL. Regeneration is mostly ABAM. Stand is open and consists mostly of 80-160cm PSME dominants and 50-110cm TSHE codominants, with few THPL. Large woodyy debris is mostly moderate and all-aged, but fairly abundant and decay class 2 (PSME) around #190-#197. Most mortality remains PSME, with about 10% of the dominant stems dead (also decay class 2). There may be some edge effect from the road, but we tried to avoid this in sampling. Char on trees 211-213 indicates that there may have been low-intensity fire in the past. Major problem with the site is small size; limited to S and E by road and to N and W by wetness. Recon tree, collected as #211, had 285 rings in about 30cm, suggesting (very roughly) a stand age of 400-450 years. Another recon tree, in a wetter area, seemed to be about 700 years old (see recon field notes). MAP OF SITE: See field form and enlarged topo map, archived at University of Washington. TREE DATA For tree form (most are erect old growth), slope position (most are midslope), remarks on the trees and microsite vegetation, see the field forms. Nearest neighbor: Distance in meters, species, DBH in cm Core azimuth: Measured as clock time to the nearest hour, with upslope taken as 12:00. They were standardized using program defaults, which involve use of a cubic spline that removes 50% of variance at 128 years. Persons desiring to use this data for purposes other than screening are advised to use the crossdated ring width measurements, also available from the ITRDB, and to develop chronologies suited to their particular needs. These data were originally collected for a study of air pollution impacts on tree growth in the Puget Sound region and were analysed on a core-by-core basis using a process that did not entail chronology development. Details are available in the following source: Brubaker, L.B.; Vega-Gonzalez, S.; Ford, E.D.; Ribic, C.A.; Earle, C.J.; and Segura, S. 1992. Old-growth Douglas-fir in western Washington. P. 333-364 in Olson, R.K.; Binkley, D.; and Bohm, M., eds., "The response of western forests to air pollution." Springer-Verlag, New York.
