Its spatial variability and long-term trends under natural versus human-influenced climate are poorly known despite being essential for predicting future effects on natural ecosystems and human societies such as crop yield, wildfires, and health. Here we combine regionally distinct reconstructions of pre-industrial summer VPD variability from Europe’s largest oxygen-isotope network of tree-ring cellulose with observational records and Earth System Model simulations with and without human forcing included. We demonstrate that an intensification of atmospheric drying during the recent decades across different European target regions is unprecedented in a pre-industrial context and that it is attributed to human influence with more than 98% probability. The magnitude of this trend is largest in Western and Central Europe and the Alps & Pyrenees, and smallest in southern Fennoscandia. In view of the extreme drought and compound events of the recent years, further atmospheric drying poses an enhanced risk to vegetation, specifically in the densely populated areas of the European temperate lowlands. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: European Union # Grant: EVK2-CT-2002-00147, 09-1234FP6-2004-GLOBAL-017008-2 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Swiss National Science Foundation # Grant: CRSII3_136295, 200021_175888 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Fennoscandia, Western and Eastern Central Europe, Alps and Pyrenees # Location: Europe # Northernmost_Latitude: 68.93 # Southernmost_Latitude: 32.97 # Easternmost_Longitude: 30.02 # Westernmost_Longitude: -5.25 # Elevation_m: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: CollectionMetadata European tree-ring d18O VPD Treydte2023 # First_Year: 1600 # Last_Year: 2020 # Time_Unit: year Common Era # Parameter_Keywords: oxygen isotopes, climate reconstructions # Core_Length_m: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Synthesis Collection Metadata Fields # NOTE: These are the fields used to capture the metadata about data sources used in a synthesis study. # Each row of this table corresponds to a column in the SourceDataTable file listed above in the Online_Resource URLs. # The rows here are linked to the columns in the data table using the ID field. # Metadata fields that follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. ## dataID dataset ID NOTE: This field is used to tie the data's metadata to the data.
