It is intended to be used in conjunction with the corresponding temperature and precipitation fields of nClimGrid-Daily. The count at each gridpoint is the number of input observations that were located within 30 miles of that gridpoint and represents a measure of observation density, one of the factors influencing the accuracy of the corresponding temperature and precipitation estimates in nClimGrid-Daily. Low observation density (a small count) frequently yields less accurate estimates than a dense set of observations (a high count), provided that other relevant factors such as topography and gradients in the variable itself are equal. This supplement was custom produced at NCEI for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and has the same grid resolution and period of record, 1951-present, with one NetCDF file per month. The radius of 30 miles was chosen merely as a convenient proxy for the actual radius of influence around a gridpoint which varies among gridpoints, days, and variables." />
