Data Set Description: This is a subset of the Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program’s National Database. The research objective of this cruise was to estimate densities of corals and sponges within the 50-500 m depth range. The localities surveyed were Anacapa Passage, Santa Cruz Island, Santa Cruz Canyon, Southeast Santa Cruz Island, West Santa Rosa Island, North San Miguel Island , West San Miguel Island, Southwest Santa Rosa Island, Southwest Santa Cruz Island, South Anacapa Island and Northwest Anacapa Island. Changes to the original dataset may have been made to conform to the National Database Schema and for quality control purposes.

Collection methodogy details:

The research objective was to estimate densities of corals and sponges within the 50-500 m depth range. We report video transect areas 30 -100 sq m, representing 85% of on-bottom occurrences. Density values are therefore in colonies per 100 sq m. Temperature shows the mean value for a transect. The EventID is the consecutive dive number, and the TrackingID is the dive and transect number. Multiple dive were done per day and multiple transects per dive. The OccurrenceComments field shows coral health as percent of colonies with injury, primarily zoanthid overgrowth. So, ‘100% injured’ means all of the observed colonies on transect had some level of injury, and NA means no observed injury, or not assessed.
