Data Set Description: This is a subset of the Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program’s National Database. Leg 2 of Windows to the Deep 2019: Exploration of the Deep-sea Habitats of the Southeastern United States was a 38-day, two-leg, telepresence-enabled expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer to collect data on priority exploration areas identified by the ocean management and scientific communities. During the expedition, scientists explored a diversity of features with mapping and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations, including deep-sea fish habitats, deep-sea coral and sponge communities, midwater habitats, cold seeps, submarine canyons, submarine landslides, and other unique geological features. The data represent observations of deep-sea corals and sponges observed during deepwater ROV surveys by NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer off of the Southeastern United State in the following localities: Canaveral Deep, Stetson Mesa South Mounds, Stetson Mesa South Scarp, Blake Plateau Knolls, Central Plateau Mounds, Stetson Mesa Potential Seep, Shark Rock’, Central Plateau Scarp, Blake Escarpment Mid, Richardson Jellyfish/Richardson, Deep Pamlico Canyon (top only), Roanoake Minor Canyon, Bodie Seep, Currituk Base Landslide, Washington Canyon, Wilmington Canyon, Baltimore Canyon, and Norfolk Seep. This research and exploration cruise (Leg 2) was conducted between June 21 through July 11, 2019. Changes to the original dataset may have been made to conform to the National Database Schema and for quality control purposes.
