North Atlantic

June marks a continuation of a record-long major hurricane (Category 3 or stronger) landfall drought in the United States. The last major hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. was Wilma on October 24, 2005. This major hurricane drought surpassed the length of the eight-years from 1861-1868 when no major hurricane struck the United States' coast. On average, a major hurricane makes landfall in the U.S. about once every three years. The reliable record of landfalling hurricanes in the U.S. dates back to 1851.

Tropical Storm Cindy formed from an area of low pressure that moved northward from the Yucatan Peninsula. Cindy reached tropical storm strength on June 20th in the Gulf of Mexico, south of Louisiana. At maximum strength, the tropical storm had winds of 60 mph and a central minimum pressure of 992 mb. As the storm moved northward, it weakened before making landfall near the Louisiana/Texas on the 22nd with sustained winds of 45 mph. This was the first tropical cyclone to make landfall in Louisiana since Hurricane Isaac in 2012. As Cindy moved over land there was widespread flooding across the Gulf Coast states with numerous tornadoes also spawned, including an EF-2. After weakening further to a remnant low, the storm merged with a cold front and continued to drop heavy rain as it moved into the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. There were at least two fatalities blamed on the storm.
