The International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) Near-Real-Time (NRT) product has been updated to a new version, Release 3.0.2. The new version includes blended preliminary NRT observations from ocean platforms distributed in Traditional Alphanumeric Code (TAC) and Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data (BUFR) formats collected from the WMO Global Telecommunications System (GTS). The data are converted to the ICOADS common format, the International Maritime Meteorological Archive (IMMA) format, quality controlled, and duplicates removed for the final product. Marine meteorological and near-surface oceanographic parameters are provided. Spatial coverage is global, and the current period of record for these files is from January 2015 to the most current, complete month.

Lineage StatementData originate from raw Traditional Alphanumeric Code (TAC) and Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data (BUFR) collected from the WMO Global Telecommunications Gateway and archived in NCEI DSIs 6111-6113 and DSI 1180. Data is converted to common formats, qc'd, duplicates removed, and output archived in NCEI repositories.

Processing Steps
  • Decode TAC and BUFR observations. Convert to IMMA1 format. Quality control using ICOADS QC software, and remove duplicates. Produce flat files, binary files, and statistical/processing files for archive and public access.
Processing EnvironmentData is produced on a linux server using ICOADS-project and NCEI-developed software.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
