Paraguay Synoptic Digital Image Records

This dataset consists of images of records containing meteorological surface observations in synoptic format for various stations in the country of Paraguay. It has a period of record ranging from 1940 to 1998. The observations include (but are not limited to) 6-hourly values of temperature, humidity, cloud coverage, cloud heights, rainfall, and wind speed/direction.

PurposeIEDRO's mission is to identify, scan and digitize environmental data at risk of loss. Data on paper and film formats are owned by the respective meteorological organizations. IEDRO staff format data files and package the data for submission to the archive. This data will be of tremendous value to scientists who research various phenomena including global climate change, hindcast studies, climate model evaluation, and statistical climate analysis. Applications of this work include, but are not limited to agricultural, hydrologic, energy, and economic policies.

Lineage StatementIn April of 2012 IEDRO visited Paraguay to initiate a data rescue and digitization project. A computer system was purchased and installed along with a stand to mount the camera for digitizing books.

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
