NOAA/WDS Paleoclimatology - Grand Combin and Colle Gnifetti Ice Cores, European Alps, 2003-2021 Major Ion Concentration, d18O, and Temperature Data
This archived Paleoclimatology Study is available from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), under the World Data Service (WDS) for Paleoclimatology. The associated NCEI study type is Ice Core. The data include parameters of ice cores with a geographic location of Europe. The time period coverage is from -53 to -71 in calendar years before present (BP). See metadata information for parameter and study location details. Please cite this study when using the data.

STUDY NOTES: Data from multiple sites in the Swiss and Italian Alps. Provided Keywords: melting, climate change, air pollution
ABSTRACT SUPPLIED BY ORIGINATOR: Global warming has caused widespread surface lowering of mountain glaciers. By comparing two firn cores collected in 2018 and 2020 from the Corbassière glacier in Switzerland we demonstrate how vulnerable these precious archives of past environmental conditions have become. Within two years, the soluble impurity records were destroyed by melting. The glacier is now irrevocably lost as an archive for reconstructing major atmospheric aerosol components. |
Purpose | Records of past temperature, precipitation, atmospheric trace gases, and other aspects of climate and environment derived from ice cores drilled on glaciers and ice caps around the world. Parameter keywords describe what was measured in this dataset. Additional summary information can be found in the abstracts of papers listed in the dataset citations. |
