| Title: | Counts of Alaska Steller sea lion adult and juvenile (non-pup) conducted on rookeries and haul-outs in Alaska Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea, and others from 1904-01-01 to 2015-07-18 (NCEI Accession 0128190) |
| Abstract: | This dataset contains counts of adult and juvenile (non-pup) Steller sea lions on rookeries and haul-outs in Alaska made between 1904 and 2015. Non-pup counts have been conducted throughout the year. Breeding season (June-mid July) non-pup counts are used for population trend analysis, while counts at other times are used for analyses of distribution and for other purposes. Non-pups are counted from the ground (by walking along the rookery), from cliff-side overlooks, and from aerial imagery (oblique and vertical orientation). Non-pup counts represent only a fraction of the total number of animals that may use a site. Sea lions haulout less frequently in winter than in summer; thus, winter counts represent a smaller fraction of the total population than summer counts. |

The counts were made between 1904 and 2015. This file includes counts obtained during breeding season aerial surveys, as well as counts obtained during winter aerial surveys, boat surveys, cliff counts, and other miscellaneous counts. The non-pup count data file (SSLnonpupcounts2016.csv) is in ASCII text format and fields are comma-delimited (.csv). It contains the following fields: SITENAME REGIONNUMB: 4 = British Columbia, Canada 5 = Southeast Alaska, 6 = Eastern Gulf of Alaska 7 = Central Gulf of Alaska 8 = Western Gulf of Alaska 9 = Eastern Aleutian Islands 10 = Central Aleutian Islands 11 = Western Aleutian Islands 12 = Bering Sea TRENDSITE 0 - not a trend site, 1 - is a trend site ROOKERY 0 - not a rookery, 1 - is a rookery, 2 - special case, rookery but not a trend rookery. If there are replicate counts for a site, all counts for that site are marked R. There are multiple counts at the same site with the same date. These are the raw counts of more than one counter using aerial photos, and in these cases, the replicate field is marked N. COUNTER: initials of counter (photo, slide, from skiff etc...) COMMENTS: (Clarification of COUNTTYPE, SOURCE, or COUNT as necessary) In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number. |
