| Abstract: | ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The ESI data were collected, mapped, and digitized to provide environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources. Hydrological data range from 1950-2000, biological data range from 1998-2004 and were compiled in 2003-2004. Data are presented as GIS and associated files, with included MOSS and .PDF files for non-GIS users. Extensive documentation is included with the data. Updates to these data were received as DVD in 2008, including the Northwest Arctic, Western Alaska, and North Slope and were archived at NCEI under accession number 0049913. |

Images of the CDs have been archived at NCEI with this accession in conjunction with the data files. This project was supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Ocean Service, Office of Response and Restoration, Hazardous Materials Response Division, Seattle, Washington and Anchorage, Alaska; NOAA Fisheries, Alaska Region; Oil Spill Recovery Institute, Cordova, Alaska; Alaska CHADUX Corporation, Anchorage, Alaska; Alaska Clean Seas, Deadhorse, Alaska; and Minerals Management Service, Anchorage, Alaska. The ESI database should not be used to the exclusion of other pertinent data or information held by state or federal agencies or other organizations. Likewise, information contained in the database cannot be used in place of consultations with environmental, natural resource, and cultural resource agencies, or in place of field surveys. This is particularly important to recognize when considering potential impacts to protected resources, such as endangered species, wetlands, etc. Acknowledgment of the originators, publishers, contributors, and sources listed would be appreciated in products derived from these data. These data were recompiled by NOS as part of a single DVD set in 2008. The DVD update data are filed at NCEI under accession number 0049913, which also includes Northwest Arctic and Western Alaska data. The original disk for this NCEI accession has been transferred to the NOAA Central Library. A copy of each disk can be generated using the .iso files in the data/0-data/disc_image/ directory.
