Title: Nitrate reduction rates and sediment physicochemical conditions from a natural and constructed marsh in coastal Alabama from 2018-11-30 to 2019-09-06 (NCEI Accession 0210961)
Abstract: This dataset includes nitrate reduction rates and physicochemical characteristics from sediments collected from a natural (NAT) and a 32-year-old constructed (CON-2) marsh on the Alabama (USA) coast. Three cores were collected from each marsh on three dates (30 November 2018, 26 March 2019, 06 September 2019) to a depth of 25 cm. Cores were partitioned to 5 cm depth increments for all measurements. Nitrogen removal (denitrification) and retention (dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, DNRA) were measured with and without glucose additions using isotope pairing on sediment slurries. Plant belowground biomass, extractable ammonium, and organic matter content were measured as well. The percent contribution of denitrification to total nitrate reduction was calculated to determine how much nitrogen is removed vs. retained.
