The Ocean Archive System searches our original datasets as they were submitted to us, not individual points or profiles. If you want to search and retrieve ocean profiles in a common format, or objectively analyzed fields, your better option may be to use one of our project applications. See: Access Data

Title: Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Atlas: Bristol Bay, Alaska, June 2004 (NODC Accession Number 0033382)
Abstract: The most widely used approach to sensitive environment mapping in the United States is the NOAA Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI). This approach systematically compiles information in standard formats for coastal shoreline sensitivity, biological resources, and human-use resources. ESI maps are useful for identifying sensitive resources before a spill occurs so that protection priorities can be established and cleanup strategies designed in advance. Using ESIs in spill response and planning reduces the environmental consequences of the spill and cleanup efforts. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources.

ESI MAPS SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR NAVIGATIONAL PURPOSES. These data were originally presented as a CD-ROM product and contain GIS project files and associated theme layer and data files, MOSS (Map Overlay Statistical System) files, detailed documentation, and digital versions of the Bristol Bay, AK atlas in .pdf format for non-GIS users. The biological data were compiled during 2003-2004. The currentness dates for these data range from 1996 to 2004 and data sources are documented within the included metadata.

A consolidated DVD update to these data, Environmental Sensitivity Index Atlas for Alaska Prince William Sound (2000), Aleutians (2001), and Bristol Bay (2004) maps and geographic information systems data has been archived at the NODC under accession number 0014162.

Besides the above warning, there are no use constraints on these data. Note that the ESI database should not be used to the exclusion of
other pertinent data or information held by state or federal agencies or other organizations. Likewise, information contained in the database cannot be used in place of consultations with environmental, natural resource, and cultural resource agencies, or in place of field surveys. Recognize that the information contained in the ESI database represents known concentration areas or occurrences of natural, cultural, and human-use resources, but does not necessarily represent the full distribution or range of each species or resource. This is particularly important to recognize when considering potential impacts to protected resources, such as endangered species, wetlands, etc. Acknowledgment
of the originators, publishers, contributors, and sources listed would be appreciated in products
