The Ocean Archive System searches our original datasets as they were submitted to us, not individual points or profiles. If you want to search and retrieve ocean profiles in a common format, or objectively analyzed fields, your better option may be to use one of our project applications. See: Access Data

Title: Nekton data from CAPT JACK in the Gulf of Mexico from 1977-10-01 to 1977-11-04 (NCEI Accession 7800317)
Abstract: Nekton data were collected from the CAPT JACK from 1 October 1977 to 4 November 1977 in the Gulf of Mexico by Texas A&M University as part of the Bryan Mound Strategic Petroleum Reserve Program. Data were converted by NODC to the F123 standard format for Fish/Shell-fish Surveys Data.

The F023 format is designed to support studies of distribution and abundance of various fishes and to provide information on what populations may be most susceptible to impacts from offshore petroleum development. The format consists of eight data records for reporting an extensive amount of information pertaining to gear types, tow methods and materials, depths of operation, etc as well as position, date and time, environmental data and cruise information. The fields pertaining to the species catch include various descriptors such as weight, sex, age, length and stomach contents. Most of the species data can be reported for individual specimen or for partial or entire hauls. A record for detail measurements concerning prey also is included as well as a text record for additional comments.

Supplementary information: Note: Metadata for this accession were extracted from a legacy database maintained by the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). The design of the database did not exactly reflect the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).

Principal Investigator (PI) and organization contact information accurately represents all available information from the legacy database at the time that this description was created. However, proper attribution of a PI to a specific institution or the role (submitting or collecting) taken by an institution may not be correct due to inexact mapping between fields in the legacy database and the CSDGM. Due to this uncertainty, the contact information was initially recorded in the Supplemental Information element of the CSDGM description.

To develop more accurate metadata, NCEI reviews metadata for all accessions on an ongoing basis.
