Title: | Water chemistry, nekton, and other data from CAPT JACK and R/V EXCELLENCE from Gulf of Mexico from 1980-06-19 to 1980-10-14 (NCEI Accession 8100335) |
Abstract: | Taxonomic (species) records of fish/nekton collected as part of the Brine Disposal Project Study. This study was an examination of the effects of elevated salinity levels that occurred in portions of the Gulf of Mexico, as a result of removal of a large terrestrial salt dome. The dome was dissolved and the resulting solution was pumped into the Gulf of Mexico, to allow the Department of Defense to utilize the resulting space for emergency petroleum storage. These data were collected by Texas A&M's Environmental Engineering Division from the shrimp trawler, the Captain Jack. Data parameters include vessel, agency, station, sample, and a 10-character taxonomic code "utilizing NODC taxonomic codes". Minimal documentation is available. Original data from Tape nos: B19272, B19273 and B19274 have been converted and stored in the current NODC data storage format. Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Chemistry (F069) format. The F069 format is used for data from chemical analyses of seawater samples. Cruise information, position, date, and time is reported for each station along with sample depth, temperature, salinity, and density (sigma-t). Chemical and biochemical parameters that may be reported include: dissolved oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, inorganic phosphate, and silicate; dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, and particulate organic nitrogen; and apparent oxygen utilization, percent oxygen saturation, adenosine triphosphate, total phaeophytin, total chlorophyll, total suspended matter, total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons, and total resolved light hydrocarbons. |

Supplementary information: | Note: Metadata for this accession were extracted from a legacy database maintained by the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). The design of the database did not exactly reflect the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Principal Investigator (PI) and organization contact information accurately represents all available information from the legacy database at the time that this description was created. However, proper attribution of a PI to a specific institution or the role (submitting or collecting) taken by an institution may not be correct due to inexact mapping between fields in the legacy database and the CSDGM. Due to this uncertainty, the contact information was initially recorded in the Supplemental Information element of the CSDGM description. To develop more accurate metadata, NCEI reviews metadata for all accessions on an ongoing basis. Points of contact for this data set include: Contact info: Agency: TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY PI: Hann, Jr., R Address: address: NOT AVAILABLE city: COLLEGE STATION state: TX postal: 77843-3146 country: UNITED STATES In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number. |
