The Ocean Archive System searches our original datasets as they were submitted to us, not individual points or profiles. Title: Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Atlas: Southern California, maps and geographic information systems data (NCEI Accession 0013225)
Abstract: This dataset comprises the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps for the shoreline of southern California. ESI data characterize coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. This atlas was developed to be utilized within desktop GIS systems and contains GIS files and related D-base files. Associated files include MOSS (Multiple Overlay Statistical System) export files, .PDF maps, and detailed user guides and metadata.

Northern California ESI data are available from the CD digital data release, March 2001 (vs.2), Seattle Washington, titled - ESI Atlas Northern California, maps and geographic information systems data, archived in NCEI accession 0013175.

Central California ESI data are available from the CD digital data release, July 2006, Seattle Washington, titled - ESI Atlas: Central California (Including Monterey Bay Sanctuary), maps and geographic information systems data, archived in NCEI accession 0013176.

San Francisco Bay ESI data are available from the CD digital data release, March 2001 (vs. 3), Seattle Washington, titled - ESI Atlas San Francisco Bay, California maps and geographic information systems data, archived in NCEI accession 0013224.

California ESI data are available from the CD titled - ESI Atlases: A sampling of digital data for geographic information systems, South Carolina, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, archived in NCEI accession 0046075.

Updated Southern California ESI data are available from the DVD digital data re-release, April 2009, Seattle, Washington, titled - ESI Atlas: California; Northern (2008), Southern (1995), Central (2006), and San Francisco (1998) maps and geographic information systems data, South Carolina, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, archived in NCEI accession 0052935.

The intertidal habitats were mapped during aerial and ground surveys conducted from 12-14 October 1993. The biological and human-use resources data were compiled by regional biologists in 1994. The dates for the original biological data vary (roughly from the 1970s to the 1990s) and are documented in within the detailed metadata file.
