| Title: | Quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) shell and tissue measurements collected from R/V LAKE GUARDIAN in Lake Ontario in the Great Lakes region from 2023-09-11 to 2023-09-17 (NCEI Accession 0287067) |
| Abstract: | Invasive dreissenid mussels (quagga mussels, Dreissena rostriformis bugensis and zebra mussels, D. polymorpha) were introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in the 1980’s and have since spread throughout the Great Lakes basin and across North America. Here we present shell length, shell weight, and tissue weights from 500 quagga mussels collected from 20 total stations in Lake Ontario in 2023. Stations were selected to cover different depth zones and geographic regions of the lake. The overall goal of the study was to be able to develop depth and region-specific allometric relationships among shell length, shell weight, and tissue weight values. The data presented here are part of an on-going collection of data starting in Lake Michigan in 2015 and collected annually in conjunction with the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative cycle around the Great Lakes. Depth was recorded upon arrival at each station. Mussels were then collected from the lake bottom using a Ponar grab sampler (area ~ 0.05 m2). Multiple samples were taken at each station to obtain a sufficient number and size range of individuals. Mussels were then hand picked from the sediments or rinsed over a 500-3000 μm sieve to remove sediments. The mussels were wrapped in paper towels and placed in petri dishes or plastic totes and stored immediately in a cooler with ice packs and then as soon as possible in a 4℃ incubator. The mussels were processed in the laboratory within 48 hours of collection from the field. |
