Title: Hydrographic, primary production, and CTD data from NEW HORIZON in the NE Pacific for the FRONTS 88 cruise from 1988-08-28 to 1988-09-23 (NCEI Accession 9700100)
Abstract: Phytoplankton, hydrochemical, and other data were collected from bottle and CTD casts in the NE Pacific Ocean (limit-180) from the New Horizon and other platforms from 28 August 1988 to 23 September 1988. Data include profiles of temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll concentrations. Data were collected by the Marine Life Research Group, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, during the FRONTS 88 Cruise. Data include profiles of temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll concentrations. CTD data is in NODC's C022 format. Hydrographic and productivity data are in IEH format.

The C022 format contains physical-chemical oceanographic data collected using electronic CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. Following processing of original high-resolution CTD/STD data NODC creates a "compressed" low-resolution version of each cast by picking off data values at selected depth levels. Data values may be recorded at up to 106 depth levels including the 34 standard depth levels used in the Oceanographic Station Data File. The low-resolution CTD/STD data are stored in the same format as the Oceanographic Station Data File, which contains mainly Nansen cast data. The compressed CTD/STD data can therefore be used to supplement Nansen cast data in studies of gross ocean structure and features where finer depth spacing of the original records is not needed.

Supplementary information: Note: Metadata for this accession were extracted from a legacy database maintained by the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). The design of the database did not exactly reflect the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).

Principal Investigator (PI) and organization contact information accurately represents all available information from the legacy database at the time that this description was created. However, proper attribution of a PI to a specific institution or the role (submitting or collecting) taken by an institution may not be correct due to inexact mapping between fields in the legacy database and the CSDGM. Due to this uncertainty, the contact information was initially recorded in the Supplemental Information element of the CSDGM description.

To develop more accurate metadata, NCEI reviews metadata for all accessions on an ongoing basis.
