abstract: Thirteen moorings sites throughout the northeastern Chukchi Sea shelf were occupied in various combinations for eight field years, 2008-2016. Two separate taut line moorings were deployed at most sites. The primary mooring employed at all sites deployed a Teledyne RDI Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) to measure water and sea ice velocities. Except at the locations over Hanna Shoals, 2011-2012, a second mooring deployed an Ice Profiling Sonar (IPS) instrument, manufactured by ASL Environmental Sciences Inc. (ASL), to measure ice keel depths and wave diagnostics, and a Sea Bird Electronics 37-SM CT sensor to measure water temperature and conductivity (and thus derive salinity). Moorings were deployed during the ice-free season, then recovered and redeployed in subsequent years. Data at the Crackerjack mooring location was collected until 2016 because though recovery was intended for 2015, weather delayed it until the next year. Data collection was conducted by Olgoonik Fairweather LLC (Fairweather) of Anchorage, Alaska, and ASL, Victoria, B.C., Canada. Fairweather provided logistical support to ASL field personnel during oceanographic mooring recovery and redeployment, and ASL was contracted to collect and analyze data. UAF processing was limited to assembling the data into this data submission. NCEI received the data in text and MS Excel formats. The latter have been exported to CSV text.
purpose: This is a synthesis of multiple data sets collected from 2008 to 2015 in support of offshore production systems for the Chukchi Sea exploration lease areas by Shell International Exploration and Production Inc. (Shell), ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc. (CPAI or COP), and Statoil. Data were provided to Dr. Tom Weingartner to be incorporated into an overall analysis of Chukchi Sea currents funded by the US Dept. of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) through Cooperative Agreement #M12AC00008 ("Characterization of the Circulation on the Continental Self Areas of the Northern Chukchi and Western Beaufort Seas").

description: Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing. Since then, broadband ADCPs have been able to generate very accurate, real-time velocity measurements.
