abstract: This dataset contains vertical water temperature data for one location in the central basin of Lake Superior from August 2018 through August 2020. This mooring was located approximately 46 miles north of Rock River, Michigan. Vertical water temperature observations were collected at 21 depths, the maximum depth of this mooring location was 198 m. The temperature measurements were collected continuously during this time period with an accuracy of ±0.002 °C. The sensor deployed at 156.6 m of depth was lost during deployment. Sensor 77303 at 38.2 m of depth stopped logging observations on 11/09/2018.
purpose: These temperature data were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (NOAA-GLERL). Temperature measurements collected at high resolution in both time and vertical space are critical to 1) assess inter-annual variability of the thermal structure of the Great Lakes; 2) test three-dimensional model parameterization; 3) understand vertical mixing processes; and 4) to aid in interpreting biological and other environmental data.
