AVHRR Pathfinder version 5.0 global 4km sea surface temperature (SST) cloud-screened monthly climatologies for 1985-2006 (NCEI Accession 0110657)

This dataset contains a global, 4km monthly sea surface temperature climatology derived from harmonic analysis of the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0 sea surface temperature time series data for 1985-2006. The climatology is available as 12 separate files, each representing one month in a climatological year. The files are in hdf format. In addition to climatological sea surface temperature, each file contains standard deviation.

It only uses Pathfinder 5.0 data with a quality flag value of 4 or greater. It is available as 12 separate files in Hierarchical Data Format Version 4 (HDF4).

Description: This data field contains the Daytime Sea Surface Temperature Monthly Climatology for month 12 from the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0 from 1985 through by the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center. The data are at 4 km-per-pixel resolution and have been averaged monthly after masking out any data with a quality flag of less than 4. Data in this file at this quality level include, for daytime: monthly SST values, number of pixels, and standard deviation.

File-naming convention for hdf files:
month[MM].pfv5sst.hdf

MM - representative month of analysis, e.g. 06 for June of the
climatological year
analysis.

0-data/Classic/ - 12 monthly classic climatology files in HDF (used to
gap-fill the harmonic climatology and for standard deviation information)
Purpose To provide daily day,night and combined climatologies of SST with high accuracy and high spatial resolution.

  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
