Maximum and minimum pentad data from AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0 sea surface temperature (SST) fields (NCEI Accession 0207698)
This dataset contains Maximum and Minimum Pentad Sea Surface Temperature (SST) fields based on the NODC/RSMAS AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0 data set. These files were created originally for use by the GODAE High Resolution SST Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP), a program now known as the Group for High Resolution SST (GHRSST). There are three sets of results here. The first set is based on the Pentad climatological fields. These files are found in the subdirectory "Climatology". A file called "README.txt" in that location describes the files. The other two sets of results are based on the daily Daytime and Nighttime Pathfinder data between 1985 and 2004 (2002 and 2004 are "interim" data while 1985-2001 and 2003 are full V5.0 data). For each five-day period, for example, Jan 1-5, all of the daily data corresponding to that range of days from all of these years is examined and the coldest, second coldest, and warmest SST values (with overall quality flag of 7 only) are selected and written to the HDF file. This process is carried out separately for daytime and nighttime data and the results placed in "Day_TimeSeries" and "Night_TimeSeries"

| Purpose | To provide sea surface temperature data and related parameters with good temporal consistency, high accuracy and spatial resolution, and for archive and distribution through the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). This SST data collection is intended primarily for climate related applications and studies and is being established to help form the basis for a Climate Data Record for SST. |
