Laboratory culture experiments with Operculina ammonoides from the Gulf of Eilat, Israel under variable salinities, temperatures, and calcium concentrations from 2015-04-29 to 2017-05-08 (NCEI Accession 0210601)

Two laboratory culture experiments with the calcitic foraminifer Operculina ammonoides collected from the Gulf of Eilat, Israel. The first experiment was under variable temperatures (22, 25, 28 °C) and Ca concentrations (10.7, 12.7, 15.3, 18.0 mmol/kg). This data was published: Hauzer et al., 2018. EPSL, 497, pp.80-91. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2018.06.004. The second experiment with O. ammonoides was under variable salinities (32.9, 36.1, 40.65, 43.0 PSU) at a constant temperature (25 °C). For both experiments we measured Na/Ca, Mg/Ca, Li/Ca and Sr/Ca in foraminiferal shells and in the experimental seawater.
The two data files contain a summary of each experiment that includes the methods; the main results – seawater chemistry (ICP-OES and ICP-MS) and foraminiferal shells chemistry (LA-ICPMS); and the overall growth of the specimens during the experiments (calculated from alkalinity depletion and weight measurements).

Purpose These laboratory culture experiments were performed in order to calibrate a new proxy: the Na/Ca ratio in foraminiferal shells as a proxy for past ocean Ca concentrations.
