This dataset includes discrete sample and profile data collected under the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence from 2012-04-20 to 2020-10-30. These data include water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, pH on the total scale, and ammonium. The Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) was implemented in 1998 with the aim of increasing Fisheries and Oceans Canada's (DFO) capacity to understand, describe and forecast the state of the marine ecosystem and to quantify the changes in the ocean physical, chemical and biological properties. Ocean acidification is an emerging priority for Fisheries and Oceans Canada under the Aquatic Climate Change Adaption Services Program and is developing the knowledge-base necessary to support the development of adaptation tools and strategies and investing in science to better understand the specific consequences of a changing climate. Specifically, the effects of ocean acidification on ecosystems in the Northwest Atlantic and large aquatic basin risk assessments consider ocean acidification at the basin and sub-basin scale are being investigated.

Supplemental Information
In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number.
Purpose The Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) was implemented in 1998 with the aim of increasing Fisheries and Oceans Canada's (DFO) capacity to understand; describe; and forecast the state of the marine ecosystem and to quantify the changes in the ocean physical; chemical and biological properties(i). A critical element of the AZMP involves an observation program aimed at assessing the variability in nutrients; phytoplankton and zooplankton. The overall aim is to identify fundamental relationships among elements of the planktonic ecosystem and establish how they respond to changes in environmental drivers(i). The AZMP derives its information on the state of the marine ecosystem from data collected at a network of sampling locations (high frequency sampling stations; cross-shelf sections; and groundfish surveys) in each region (Quebec; Gulf; Maritimes; NL) sampled at a frequency of biweekly to once annually.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: TICW_01; Unit: umol / kg; Observation type: profile; Measured or calculated: measured; Sampling instrument: CTD and rosette bottle sampler: CTD model; sensors and other details to be specified in comment section; Analyzing instrument: Vindta 3C (Marianda; Kiel; Germany) which includes a UIC CO2 coulometer detector CM5017O (emulator CM5011; UIC.; Joliet; USA); Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Seawater samples were collected from standard depths in 500 mL borosilicate glass reagent bottles. Three mL of water was removed to allow room for thermal expansion and the sample was preserved within 30 minutes of collection with 0.250 mL of a mercuric chloride saturated solution; then sealed with Apiezon M grease and the ground glass stoppers secured in place with rubber bands. The samples were stored at room temperature until on-shore laboratory analysis. The samples were analysed for DIC using a Vindta 3C fully automated system in conjunction with a coulometer (UIC Inc.) to quantify total CO2 purged from the acidified sample.
