browse graphicPreview graphic
The following dataset was collected as part of a project assessing the abilities of two oyster reef substrates to recruit and sustain oyster populations and mitigate erosion of landward salt marsh. Data were collected on Carrot Island in the Rachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve in Beaufort, North Carolina, where experimental reefs and control sites were sited on one low- and one high-energy marsh shoreline. The dataset includes metrics reflecting marsh performance (Spartina alterniflora shoot density, marsh shoreline change, marsh elevation) and oyster performance (oyster densities, oyster lengths, reef area, reef height). Additional shapefiles pertaining to AMBUR analysis of shoreline change and the position of the marsh shorelines in 2018 and 2020 are supplied. The data are supplied as xlsx, docx files and shapefiles. These data are meant to accompany the journal article “Reef design and site hydrodynamics mediate oyster restoration and marsh stabilization outcomes” (Wellman et al. 2021, Ecological Applications).

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Adult Oyster Lengths (measured); Units: mm; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Ruler; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Representative oyster samples were removed from shell bag and Oystercatcher reefs. Adult oyster lengths were assessed in the lab.
  • Parameter or Variable: Landward Marsh Elevation Change (measured); Units: Meters; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Elevation measurements relative to NAVD88 were collected landward of experimental reefs in 2018 and 2020.
  • Parameter or Variable: Juvenile Oyster Lengths (measured); Units: mm; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Ruler; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Representative oyster samples were removed from shell bag and Oystercatcher reefs. Juvenile oyster lengths were assessed in the lab.
  • Parameter or Variable: Oyster Densities (calculated); Units: Individuals per meter squared; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: None; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Representative oyster samples were removed from shell bag and Oystercatcher reefs and control sites. Densities of adult and juvenile oysters in these samples were assessed in the lab, and scaled up to the entire reef/plot based on surface area calculations.
  • Parameter or Variable: Oyster Reef Area (calculated); Units: meters squared; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Using a high-resolution RTK GPS unit, I walked the perimeters of experimental Oystercatcher and shell bag reefs. From these data, reef area could be calculated using Arc GIS.
  • Parameter or Variable: Oyster Reef Height (measured); Units: m; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Using a high-resolution RTK GPS unit, I collected elevation measurements on top of experimental reefs and at the adjacent substrate, subtracting the latter from the former to calculate reef height.
  • Parameter or Variable: Marsh Shoot Density (measured); Units: Shoots per meter squared; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Quadrat; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Shoot density of Spartina alterniflora was assessed in a 1 m2 quadrat at two stations landward of experimental reefs (3m and 5m).
  • Parameter or Variable: Marsh Shoreline Change (calculated); Units: m; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Using a high-resolution RTK GPS unit, I delineated the marsh edge of two experimental shorelines in 2018 and 2020, then using Arc GIS to calculate shoreline change behind each experimental plot over time.
  • Parameter or Variable: Marsh Vegetation Line Positions (measured); Units: Relative to NC State Plane 3200; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: These shapefiles depict the position of the Creek and Ramp marsh vegetation lines in September 2018 and August 2020.
  • Parameter or Variable: Creek Shoreline AMBUR Results (calculated); Units: End point rate (m per yr); Observation Category: model output; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: This shapefile includes the results of AMBUR analysis on the creek shoreline. AMBUR (Analyzing Moving Boundaries Using R) calculate shoreline change between provided shapefiles, in this case, the Marsh Vegetation Line Positions provided for the years 2018 and 2020. The end-point rate is a method of calculating annual shoreline change, and can be found in the attribute table of this shapefile.
  • Parameter or Variable: Ramp Shoreline AMBUR Results (measured); Units: End point rate (m per yr); Observation Category: model output; Sampling Instrument: Trimble R10 GNSS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: This shapefile includes the results of AMBUR analysis on the ramp shoreline.
