This dataset contains surface discrete measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, water temperature, salinity and other variables collected from surface discrete observations using flow through pump and other instruments during NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown Lophelia II – Cruise 3, RB09-05 (EXPOCODE 33RO20090819), in the Gulf of Mexico from 2009-08-19 to 2009-09-03. Increasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide from human industrial activities are causing changes in global ocean carbon chemistry. Through the SOOP program we measure air and ocean surface pCO2 and take discrete samples of other carbon parameters. This effort is in support of the coastal monitoring and research objectives of the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) and the Climate Program Office.

- Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Unit: micro-mol/kg; Observation type: Surface discrete measurement (flow through); In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Sampling instrument: flow through system; Analyzing instrument: Coulometer used: AOML2 (SOMMA #2); Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Analysis date: September 22, 2009 Coulometer used: AOML2 Blank: 12-25 counts/min CRM # used and assigned value (include both DIC and salinity): Batch 85, c: 2000.4 umol/kg, S: 33.326 CRM value measured: AOML 2: offset 3.7 umol/kg (2004.2 umol/kg) Average run time, minimum run time, maximum run time: 13 min, 9 min, 20 min Reproducibility: (# samples and average difference): 4 sets of duplicate samples, average difference 3.3 umol/kg. The difference of the sampling times of the samples 29 and 24 was 10 minutes. These samples had difference of the duplicates 9.1 umol/kg. The average difference of sampling times of all the duplicate samples was about 7 minutes. CRM, salinity and HgCl2 correction applied: Salinity correction was applied using TSG salinity Remarks - The volume correction was applied due to added HgCl2 (Measured DIC*1.00037). The first CRM of each cell was used for a CRM correction.; CRM manufacturer: Dr. A. Dickson of UCSD; CRM batch number: Batch 85; Preservation method: saturated HgCl2; Preservative volume: 0.2 ml; Quality flag convention: WOCE quality control flags are used: 2 = good value, 3 = questionable value, 4 = bad value, 5 = value not reported, 6 = mean of replicate measurements, 9 = sample not drawn.; Researcher name: Rik Wanninkhof, Leticia Barbero; Researcher institution: Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
