This dataset contains profile discrete measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, water temperature, salinity and other parameters collected from profile discrete observations using CTD, Niskin Bottles and other instruments during the R/V Knorr cruise KN2011-4 (EXPOCODE 316N20110426), in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2011-04-26 to 2011-05-02. Increasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide from human industrial activities are causing changes in global ocean carbon chemistry. Through the SOOP program we measure air and ocean surface pCO2 and take discrete samples of other carbon parameters. This effort is in support of the coastal monitoring and research objectives of the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) and the Climate Program Office.

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC; Unit: micro-mol/kg; Observation type: Discrete profile measurement; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Sampling instrument: CTD, Niskin Bottles; Analyzing instrument: Coulometer used: AOML3 (SOMMA #3); AOML4 (SOMMA #4); Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Analysis date: July, 2011 Coulometer used: AOML3 and 4 (DICE 3 and 4) Samples were run on two DICE that each were experiencing problems with high blanks and interface issues causing the loop temperatures not to be read and, by using a default of “0” causing incorrect cal. Factors. All calculations had to be done from scrap. Sample bottles 179,178, and 180 had quality flags of “4”. The calculated value looks OK but CRM was > 165 too high.
