This dataset contains zooplankton species distribution and abundance data collected in the Chukchi Sea during the August 2017 Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) research cruise. The dataset is a comma separate values file (csv). The data include the location, date, time, depth, abundance and biomass of zooplankton collected during the 2017 AMBON cruise. Zooplankton were caught with traditional 150µm plankton nets and taxonomically identified. Each data file include the location, date, time, depth, and identification of zooplankton taxa collected during the 2017 AMBON cruise. The data files are presented in a table structure using Darwin Core OBIS-GBIF forms, using Darwin Core term names as column names and in keeping with that metadata standard. They are:
AMBON2017_zooplanklton_Event_DWC.csv, AMBON2017_zooplankton_MoF_DWC.csv, AMBON2017_zooplankton_Occurrence_DWC.csv.

This dataset also contains the file AMBON_station_masterlist.csv, describing stations sampled during AMBON cruises.

Purpose The goal of the Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) project is to demonstrate and build an operational marine biodiversity observing network from microbes to whales, integrating diversity levels from genetic to organismal. Zooplankton are the key link between primary production and many other trophic levels. Their incredible numbers and their ability to store large amounts of lipids make them an essential food source for many pelagic-feeding fishes, birds and mammals.

In this instance, controlled vocabulary from NERC. Zooplankton samples were collected with 60-cm twin ring nets fitted with 150 µm nets and flowmeters. Nets were deployed vertically to within approximately 3-5 meters of the seafloor. Samples were preserved in 5% buffered formalin. In the laboratory, each sample was poured into a sorting tray and large organisms were removed, measured, and enumerated. The sample was then sequentially split using a Folsom splitter until the smallest subsample contained approximately 100 specimens of the most abundant taxa. The most abundant taxa were identified, enumerated, and measured. Each larger subsample was examined to identify, enumerate and measure the larger, less abundant taxa. Organisms were staged when appropriate. Measurements were completed using the ZoopBiom program. The weight of measured animals was predicted from species-specific length-weight relationships or from relationships of morphologically similar species. Typically, 400-600 animals were measured within each sample. Organisms were identified to lowest taxonomic level possible, usually species. Taxonomy was merged with the APHIA identification number from WORMS www.marinespecies.org.
