Trajectory profile data from glider SBU01-04, including pH, deployed in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, North Atlantic Ocean from 2021-05-13 to 2021-06-14 (NCEI Accession 0293515)

This dataset contains the trajectory profile data from glider SBU01-04 from one seasonal deployment to investigate conditions in the Middle Atlantic Bight including the monitoring of ocean acidification. The glider used for the automated observation includes an integrated deep rated version of the Ion Sensitive Field Effect Transistor (ISFET)-based pH sensor. The pH sensor unit is complemented with existing glider sensors including a CTD, a WETLabs FLBBCD ECO puck configured for simultaneous chlorophyll fluorescence and optical backscatter measurements, and an Aanderaa Optode for measuring dissolved oxygen. This deployment was launched south of Shinnecock Bay, NY and thence ran across the shelf, then SW to a NW section up toward NY City and was recovered off Point Pleasant, NJ. This delayed mode, high-resolution post-processed dataset contains CTD, chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen and pH data.

The pH sensor (sampling rate 1 Hz) is coupled to a CTD unit (sampling rate 0.5 Hz) on the glider to provide simultaneous measurements of measured reference voltage, salinity, pressure, and temperature. Standardization Technique Description: For the initial calibration, the pressure response function f(P), temperature response constants k2, and conditioning offset k0 are derived in a controlled laboratory. Calibrations for f(P) and k2 are performed in a pressure vessel with a working fluid of 0.01N Hydrochloric acid (HCl). pH sensors undergo oceanographic temperature ranges (5-35°C) and pressure ranges (0-3000 psi) for 1 week. For the k0 calibration, the sensor is conditioned to natural seawater for 4-5 days before k0 is calculated. For each deployment the sensor is cleaned and the sensor is re-conditioned to natural seawater.; Method reference: Calculations were performed in Matlab using phcalc.m as described in Saba et al 2019 https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2019.00664. And then phase lag corrected using the method described in Bittig, et al. 2014 (DOI 10.4319/lom.2014.12.617)
