This dataset includes low resolution real-time physical trajectory profile data from glider ud_476 deployed by Rutgers University and University of Delaware in the Mid-Atlantic Bight from 2024-07-09 to 2024-07-12 for the NOAA Hurricane Glider and Sustained Underwater Glider Observations for Improving Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Intensity Forecast project.

The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) received the data in this dataset from the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) National Glider Data Assembly Center (NGDAC). The IOOS NGDAC received the data in one or more netCDF files comprising an entire glider deployment. The data are measurements of physical oceanographic properties such as temperature, salinity, conductivity, and density. The IOOS NGDAC checked the files for compliance to their netCDF file convention, aggregated the files into a single netCDF file, and then submitted the file to NCEI for long-term preservation. Data files may be either low resolution real-time or full resolution. Full resolution files are designated as "delayed" in the netCDF file name.

The data producer provided this summary: This project supports the deployment and real-time data delivery of autonomous underwater gliders in the coastal ocean to better resolve and understand essential ocean features and processes that contribute to hurricane intensification or weakening prior to making landfall. This includes a partnership between the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) regional associations such as MARACOOS, SECOORA, CariCOOS and institutions including the University of Puerto Rico, University of the Virgin Islands, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, University of Delaware, and Rutgers University. The goal of the project is to provide real-time data for ocean model validation and assimilation throughout hurricane season. This project is supported by the Disaster Recovery Act. This glider will sample a triangle pattern from the mouth of the Delaware Bay out toward the shelf-break and will additionally be used to collect geolocation data to train an animal tag geolocation algorithm.
