NESDIS Global 50-km twice weekly sea surface temperature (SST) product, 2001 to 2016

browse graphicPreview graphic
Product shows global sea surface temperatures in degrees C. It is a composite gridded-image derived from 8-km resolution Global SST Observations and is generated twice weekly (Tuesday and Saturday) on a global scale. SST is defined as the skin temperature of the ocean surface water.

Processing Steps
  • The 8-km resolution SST observations (SSTOBS) are analyzed and processed to level 3 gridded products. These SST fields are generated by analyzing all the SST observations collected from the time of the last analysis to the time of the current analysis. The gridding or analysis process is a weighted average of all the SST retrievals in a search area about the gridpoint. The search area is dependent on the grid spacing of the analysis and the SST gradient at the gridpoint. The retrievals are spatially weighted by the inverse square of the distance from the gridpoint. There is no temporal weighting.
Source Datasets
  • Sea Surface Temperature Observations (SSTOBS)/SST Retrievals
    • Description of Source: Level 2 sea surface temperature observations from which the Level 3 SST gridded products are created. The NESDIS and Navy retrieval archive cartridges contain eight days of 8-km resolution SST observations from a current operational NOAA polar orbiter.
  • Sea Surface Temperature (50 KM)
    • Description of Source: 50 km (0.5 degree) gridded SST product is generated twice a week for regions, archived by NODC, and distributed through CLASS.
    • Temporal extent used: 1974-03-01 to Present

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
