Coastal Geostationary Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Products from NOAA GOES and Japanese MTSAT-1R satellites, coastal United States, 2000 - present

browse graphicPreview graphic
The NOAA Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) generates geostationary sea surface temperature (SST) products. These products are derived from NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and Japan's Multi-functional Transport Satellite 1 Replacement (MTSAT-1R). They are available for the coastal United States including Alaska and Hawaii.

Available products include GOES CoastWatch Regional SST, GOES Hourly SST Matchup, GOES Hourly SST, GOES 24-hourly SST, GOES 3-hourly SST, GOES CoastWatch Sectors SST (3-hour), GOES SST Daily Frontal Product, Blended SST 5-km Daily Product, Blended SST 11-km Daily Product, Meteosat Hourly SST Matchup, Meteosat 1-hour averaging SST, Meteosat 24-hour averaging SST, Meteosat 3-hour averaging SST, MTSAT Hourly SST Matchup, MTSAT Hourly SST, MTSAT 24-hourly SST, and Blended SST Night-only 5-km Daily Products. Data are output as binary at 6 km resolution.

Supplemental Information
This product was originally produced by the NOAA Office of Satellite and Data Distribution (OSDPD), which was merged with the NOAA Office of Satellite Operations (OSO) to form the NOAA Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) in 2011.
Purpose Geostationary satellite measurements of sea surface temperature products are useful to understand and manage ecosystems and global climate.
Use Limitations
  • accessLevel: Public
  • Distribution liability: NOAA and NCEI make no warranty, expressed or implied, regarding these data, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty. NOAA and NCEI cannot assume liability for any damages caused by any errors or omissions in these data. If appropriate, NCEI can only certify that the data it distributes are an authentic copy of the records that were accepted for inclusion in the NCEI archives.

Processing Steps
  • The NOAA Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution generate sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals on an operational basis from the GOES satellite Imagers. Level 1b GOES Variable (GVAR) data is converted to McIDAS Area Format and algorithms are applied to create SST products and a matchup file.
