Will websites and datasets be disrupted or unavailable?

Some datasets may have delayed update cycles. Some sites, applications, and datasets may be temporarily unavailable while they are being migrated. See the NCEI Alerts page for a list of impacted products and datasets.

What should I do if I can’t access a site or dataset?

If you can’t access a site or dataset, check the NCEI Alerts page for scheduled outages or disruptions. If so, access will be restored after the page/data is migrated.

If there’s not an alert that matches your issue, fill out our website feedback form and share the link of the page you’re having issues with.

Will any datasets be retired as part of the cloud migration?

No datasets will be retired as part of the cloud migration. Please note that several NCEI datasets were retired over the last 18 months. Refer to the NESDIS Change Notice page for details.

Will any datasets change during migration?

Datasets will continue to be updated, but the content of the datasets will not be changed. NCEI continues to prioritize the integrity of the data.

Will data formats change?

Data formats will not change; however, many datasets will also be available in cloud native formats such as Zarr, Parquet, and GeoJSON after the migration.

Will the way I access data change?

  • Links and URLs for data, websites/applications, and services on ncei.noaa.gov will remain the same.
  • Data/sites with legacy urls (ngdc.noaa.gov, nodc.noaa.gov, and ncdc.noaa.gov) will move to ncei.noaa.gov
  • Bulk data folders will move from web accessible folders (WAFs) to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
