browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset includes continuous sea surface measurements of partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), sea surface temperature and salinity collected from the Kwakshua Channel (KC) Buoy off the central coast of British Columbia from 2018-05-01 to 2023-05-06. Kwakshua Channel, located near Fitz Hugh Sound on the central coast of British Columbia, has been a site for moored, high-resolution measurements of surface seawater and marine boundary layer CO2 content since May 2018. Measurements of in situ temperature, salinity, seawater and atmospheric CO2 partial pressure are made every 30 minutes using a Battelle Seaology (MApCO2) System. The effort to collect these data are part of the Hakai Institute’s directive to advance the understanding of carbon cycling in northeast Pacific coastal settings with specific emphasis on ocean acidification.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: pCO2 (fCO2) autonomous; Abbreviation: SW pCO2 wet SST; Unit: µatm; Observation type: Measurements from moored buoy with MApCO2 system; Measured or calculated: Calculated from measured CO2 mole fractions (xCO2) and ambient atmospheric pressure.; Sampling instrument: MApCO2 equilibrator; Analyzing instrument: Battelle Seaology (MApCO2) System with LI-COR LI-820; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: All measurements are at sea surface temperature and atmospheric pressure. During the equilibration cycle, a closed loop of air equilibrates with seawater for 10 minutes. Once the equilibration period is complete, the pump stops and the system opens to the atmosphere allowing the pressure to equilibrate with atmospheric pressure. Measurements are recorded for 30 seconds at 2 Hz and then averaged. During the air cycle, fresh air is pumped through the detector for 1 minute. Once the pump stops, the system opens to the atmosphere allowing the pressure to equilibrate with atmospheric pressure. Measurements are recorded for 30 seconds at 2 Hz and then averaged. The gas streams for both the air cycle and equilibrator cycle are partially dried before entering the detector. The values listed as wet xCO2 generally have relative humidity levels ranging from 40 to 80 percent. The humidity levels increase over the course of a deployment. Sampling occurs every 30 minutes. The infrared detector is calibrated at the beginning of every sampling period using a zero and span gas. To calculate the dry measurements, the water mole fraction in the Licor detector is measured using a relative humidity sensor located immediately downstream of the detector.; Standardization technique: Measurements calibrated using onboard zero and span gas with a known concentration of 907 ppm (Praxair, Inc.); Standardization frequency: Every measurement; Standard gas manufacturer: Scott-Marrin Inc.; Standard gas uncertainty: 2 ppm for calibrated xCO2; 2 µatm for pCO2; Uncertainty: 2 µatm; Quality flag convention: no quality flag applied; Method reference: Sutton, A.J., Sabine, C.L., Maenner-Jones, S., Lawrence-Slavas, N., Meinig, C., Feely, R.A., Mathis, J.T., Musielewicz, S., Bott, R., Mclain, P.D., Fought, H.J., and Kozyr, A.
