The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R Series is the current generation of NOAA geostationary weather satellites. It has significantly improved capacity to detect and observe environmental phenomena, resulting in improved public safety, more accurate forecasts, and better protection of property.
GOES-16 was the first satellite in this series, which replaced GOES-13 as the operational GOES-East satellite on December 18, 2017. GOES-17 became the operational GOES-West satellite on February 12, 2019. GOES-18 is the latest satellite to be launched and will replace GOES-17 sometime in 2023. GOES-U is the last of the series and will be launched sometime in 2024; it will extend the availability of the operational GOES satellite system through 2036.
